I had the privilege of participating in a T1D awareness walk as an ambassador, leading my own team of volunteers to make a real impact. I organized every detail, from creating Google Forms to streamline sign-ups, to designing and printing informational cards, to assigning tasks for each team member so that our day would run smoothly. Managing all of this myself taught me what it truly means to take initiative, lead with purpose, and empower others to contribute meaningfully.

One moment during the walk reminded me why this work matters so much. Another ambassador was handing out the new diabetic Barbie dolls, and I noticed a little blonde girl with a Dexcom on her tiny arm, it was almost bigger than her wrist. My heart sank seeing her, but in that moment I also felt a surge of connection. I remembered myself as a little girl navigating life with type 1 diabetes, and I realized why I am so passionate about this cause: to raise awareness, advocate for a cure, and support families who might struggle to afford life saving care for their children. Seeing her smile as she held the doll reminded me that even small gestures like this walk, this doll, our outreach can give hope and make someone feel seen.

Leading my own team and managing every part of our participation gave me a deep sense of responsibility and purpose. It showed me that leadership isn’t just about organizing it’s about creating moments of connection, inspiring others, and taking action for something bigger than yourself. This experience strengthened my commitment to T1D advocacy and reminded me that, with dedication and heart, one person can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.
